Thomas M. Stevens, a REALTOR® from Vienna, Va., was the 2006 President of the National Association of REALTORS®.

Stevens, a REALTOR® for more than 40 years, is a broker with Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage in Vienna, Va. For several years he was Senior Vice President of Business Development at NRT LLC. He also served as senior vice president for the Mid-Atlantic region and president and chief operating officer of NRT’s operations in Washington, D.C. and Virginia, overseeing over 90 offices and more than 4,000 sales associates, serving real estate consumers in Maryland, Virginia, Washington, D.C., and Delaware. A REALTOR® since 1972, Stevens is a Graduate, REALTOR® Institute (GRI) and has earned the Certified Residential Broker (CRB) and the Certified Residential Specialist (CRS) designations.

As NAR’s President, Stevens made his theme “Tomorrow’s Future Is Today.” He worked on several technology initiatives and helped to form an Internet strategy work group. Stevens also actively lobbied to Congress on behalf of the association to prevent large banks from entering real estate as well as to keep retailers such as WalMart and Home Depot out of banking.

In 2005, he was NAR President-elect, and was First Vice President in 2004. He has also served NAR as vice president and liaison to Government Affairs, coordinating the committees under Government/Political Relations with the overall objectives of the association.

He has been active on various NAR committees, serving as a Regional Vice President in 2001 and as 1996 committee liaison for the Law & Policy Group. He also served as chair of the Issues Mobilization Committee in 1992, the Multiple Listing Service Policy Committee in 1989 and the Large Board Sub-forum in 1987. He has been an NAR director since 1985 and is a life member of the REALTORS® Political Action Committee (RPAC).

Stevens is a past president of the Virginia Association of REALTORS® and was named REALTOR® of the Year by the state association in 1991. He has chaired the Issues Mobilization, Strategic Planning, and the By-Laws committees of the Northern Virginia Association of REALTORS®. He was named REALTOR® of the Year by his local association in 1986 and earned its Distinguished Service Award in 1978.

An active member of his community, Stevens has participated in many local organizations, serving in leadership roles for associations such as the American Heart Association, Northern Virginia Transportation Alliance, and the Capital Campaign Committee of the Ronald McDonald House Charities.
