Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac now support nearly 80 percent of the residential market during the pandemic providing forbearance, underwriting, and even purchasing mortgages that enter forbearance early. Yet, the future of the GSEs remains at the forefront of industry discussions as concerns regarding market stability continue to mount in Washington.

Since first unveiling its proposal to transition Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac into private mortgage market utilities in 2019 the National Association of REALTORS® has continued to refine its vision and how to best achieve these changes in current and future economic environments. The January 14, 2021 event showcased new research that answers critical questions about how Fannie and Freddie should make this transition, including how to attract investors, minimize taxpayer risk, and keep costs down while maximizing access to credit.
