What color should you choose to upgrade your deck and porch? The Behr Paint Company says “Tugboat” would be the trendiest choice for 2024.

The paint firm chose the blended brown and gray color as its “2024 Exterior Stain Color of the Year,” which “provides a new perspective on color for exterior wood stains, adding both character and freshness to projects,” says Erika Woelfel, vice president of color and creative services at Behr. “With a timeless finish, Tugboat’s versatile brownish-gray color provides organic beauty to make any outdoor space feel like a safe harbor.”

Along with its Stain of the Year, Behr also announced a “Curb Appeal Collection,” which includes 30 exterior paint, stain and spray paint colors, for painting the entire house, the front door or just the trim.

Other paint companies also have chimed in with their picks for the 2024 Stain of the Year for decks, siding and other wood surfaces. PPG chose “Black Walnut” as its top pick.

“There is a trend in wood finishes right now that leans into warmer midtones and ventures into darker shades,” says Ashley McCollum, PPG’s marketing manager and global color expert. “Black Walnut bridges the gap between those tones, exuding warmth without going into red hues.”
