Know Your Strengths
Rylie Schroeder, 29, knew she wanted to be in real estate “as long as I can remember,” she says. In college, while interning for a brokerage for two summers, she realized she had a serious gap. “I’m a huge introvert,” she says. “The sales part of connecting to people doesn’t come naturally to me.”
Schroeder figured she would take any sales job for a couple of years to build up her skills and confidence, and then pursue a real estate career. She ended up selling men’s custom suits at an average price of $5,000 each. Not only was she successful, but after she earned her real estate license, some of her haberdashery customers became real estate clients. She and the clothier have even partnered to host special events.
“I’ve learned how to be an extrovert when I need to be,” she says. “Being an introvert helps me to sit back and analyze. It helps the clients feel in control. I don’t have to be the loudest person in the room.”
Rylie’s acute self-awareness also became evident when she started flipping properties. She had three such ventures before age 27. One, a bungalow that she decorated with bright colors and funky wallpaper and turned into a vacation rental, was so successful that she was named an Airbnb Superhost. She sold the property a year later.
“It was an amazing experience and also confirmed my suspicion that I am more passionate about the design aspect of investing versus the landlord/host piece that requires frequent interaction,” she says.
