Receiving a Top Producer Award in 2022 from the Chicago Association of REALTORS® wowed Melanie Miller. But the 29-year-old says she doesn’t rest on her laurels. “I grew up in a family that owned our own home and made investments; I saw what that has done for me and my family.” Her childhood consisted of riding her bike all summer long in their small suburb on the south side of Chicago, where the rich history and culture are alive, Miller says. “It’s great to invest in these neighborhoods, and you don’t have to be fearful.”
The real estate bug hit her after she bought her first investment property at age 23. She was in her final semester of college and expecting her first child with her husband, a Chicago police officer. “We took our tax refund check and bought a duplex. Having a tenant in place gave us the leverage for me to stay home for a while and get acclimated to being a mother. I got licensed shortly after that.”
High school and college sports proved a good training ground for her career. She played volleyball in high school and for a collegiate Division I team at Western Illinois University. “What you love doing becomes a job. You have 5 a.m. workouts, and you’re traveling a lot and trying to get all your work done.” But Miller doesn’t think she would have been as disciplined, diligent or focused as she is now if she hadn’t played the sport.
