In her work, Tami Hicks noticed home sellers throwing out perfectly good furniture that they didn’t need. Hicks gathered a few friends and cofounded a nonprofit Overflow Thrift Store, which takes donated home furnishings and clothing to resell and recycle. Store proceeds are donated to 10 nonprofit organizations, and the store also partners with eight community agencies to provide free shopping vouchers to clients in need. Since 2014, Overflow has donated $512,000 to nonprofits and diverted 700 tons of materials from landfills.
