Home exteriors often come in just a few shades: beige, brick red, or grey. But across the country, more colorful homes are popping up in everything from a bright lilac to a cheery yellow. It’s all part of the latest color craze that has been gracing more interiors, from bold, colored kitchen cabinets to stronger hues on painted walls. Now that trend is heading outside.

Brightly colored homes are showing up on sites like Houzz, Instagram, and Pinterest. The hashtag #colorfulhouses has been trending on social media in recent weeks.

Some homeowner associations are stepping in to stop these colorful abodes. Some HOAs require a more unified look, such as a row of neutral colored single-family homes. But for owners unbound by HOA regulations, they may have more freedom to go bold.

Colorful houses aren’t so unusual in other countries, such as in Mexico, which has become well-known for its vibrant colored houses. Beach towns also are often known for their pastel-colored homes.

Red, green, yellow, pink, purple, blue, and even black—what do you think? Is it too much personality for resale, or could being the “pink house” on the block become a hot trend?
