Wrapping up another REALTORS® Legislative Meetings & Trade Expo with the National Association of REALTORS®, member leaders culminated the busy week with the Board of Directors meeting.
NAR's 2019 President John Smaby thanked the nearly 10,000 REALTORS® who made the pilgrimage to Washington, D.C., this year, and reflected on the events and successes of the week. One of the biggest successes: Members met face-to-face with more than 90% of the members of Congress.
Seeing a video presentation during the meeting on the year-long progress made on the Chicago headquarters building was great. They’re doing an excellent job, and I’m always proud of our Michigan Avenue address. But I am also proud of NAR’s commitment to sustainability, as noted by the building's LEED re-certification and the percentage of sustainable materials in the project, as well as the ongoing operational efforts to limit the amount going into landfills and maximize materials that are recycled.
One of the biggest news-worthy items that occurred during the BOD meeting was the election of Leslie Rouda Smith as the 2020 first vice president-elect. I'm so proud of my good friend Leslie! I know she is going to do an amazing job for NAR in the years forthcoming.
As always, we remembered those past NAR directors who have passed away in the last year. And we also recognized the two new, well-deserving NAR Distinguished Service Award recipients: Kit Hale, managing broker of MKB, REALTORS®, in Roanoke, Va., and Ken Libby, a broker with Stowe Area Realty in Stowe, Vt. Congratulations to them both!
We also extended the “That’s Who We R” ad campaign for another three years, reviewed our RPAC successes, heard an update on the C2EX initiative, and approved the usual motionsand committee reports. It’s always impressive to see our organization in action.
This week showed me once again that we are a family...the REALTOR® family.
