A Champion for the LGBTQ+ Community

Since selling his first property at the age of 18, Thomas Wheeler has been excelling, and not just as a real estate business leader, but also as an advocate for equal rights and civil liberties. In addition to leading an LGBTQ+ owned and operated real estate team, he hosts community fundraisers and creates business alliances to help LGBTQ+ persons find safety and support in daily life, whether for themselves or a family member.

“Unfortunately, fair housing violations occur on a daily basis against folks from all walks of life,” says Wheeler, 27, who serves as chair for the Boise Regional REALTORS® Cultural Diversity Committee and a member of its Communications Advisory Committee. “The only way to address these issues within our industry is to create space for listening and learning.”

He helps to lead the LGBTQ+ Real Estate Alliance Idaho, a membership organization where people feel safe to seek out local resources and allies. “For example, through the alliance, we have offered agents and brokers a chance to talk with an attorney who was offering free name changes as well as a title officer who could speak to preparing our trans and nonbinary community for the home purchasing process to help eliminate some of the subconscious barriers, such as going to the closing and having a gender marker listed that doesn’t match your identity.”

Named the Boise-based Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Visionary of the Year, Wheeler helped the nonprofit to raise more than $13,000 for cancer research last year. And he recently led a drag show fundraiser that resulted in the single largest donation of $7,000 to Intermountain Fair Housing Council.
