Always a Teacher

Although Lindsey Pearlstein Smith, 29, had been teaching at an elementary school for three years and feeling rewarded, she still needed part-time jobs like tutoring and teaching yoga classes to make ends meet. Her father, a real estate broker, strongly encouraged her to get her license, but she wasn’t interested. Plus, she didn’t have time. But during the pandemic, when her face-to-face interactions were canceled, she took the classes, passed the exam and launched a new career.

By selling real estate, she is still teaching: Most of her clients are first-time buyers who need help understanding their new responsibilities. She anticipates clients’ questions and has put together resources and guides for them.

“I educate buyers and sellers on a daily basis,” she says. “Understanding how to explain concepts, make plans and set expectations are crucial to our line of work.”

For first-time buyers, Pearlstein Smith may need to provide guidance on how financing works, as well as the details and responsibilities of homeownership. With seniors, the issues are often technology-related, so she will show them how to use various online tools to see how much homes are selling for.

“I get to do this every day,” she says. “I consider it a privilege, not an obligation.”

Another current “student” is her German shepherd, Watson. He’s an energetic canine who needs loads of physical and mental stimulation, so she takes him to weekly obedience classes and runs him through an agility course.
